shaun of the dead evaluation
the sounds that we created needed to appere realistic as it was based in the real world ( just with zombies) because of this the sounds needed top be realistic, to do this we recorded the sounds we wanted by actually doing what was done on the clip. some of the sounds we didn't create and we then went on a website called freesfx, we did this so we could collect sounds that would be difficult to create. e.g police sirens.
in the shaun of the dead video we made many sounds like walking, running and the sounds of cans in the the fridge. we did get a few sounds that we couldn't produce ourselves like sirens and music. we obtained these sounds legally from free sfx. we spent about 3 weeks collecting the sounds and putting them into the clip.
during the recording we recorded the sounds about three or fore times. we recorded it several times because we would have a large selection of sounds to use for the project. we needed to use the sounds that sounded the best and in some cases had less background noise.
we spent about two weeks adding the sounds and then we made the sounds louder or quieter e.g the sounds of the zombies was made a bit quieter as they where a fair distance from Shaun. in the shop we added some sounds from the internet as we could not make them and because we did't have enough time to make it.
my role in the protect was the editor. i was the one who did the majority of the editing while the rest of the group was collecting more sounds or finishing planning documents or however i did not do all of the editing as the other members of my group added some sounds as well.

Planning documentation for Shaun of the dead
0:00-0:19 - Shaun starts walking outside on average pavement slabs, before entering shop. - Record sounds of footsteps on pavement
0:01 - Shaun trips up on kerb on the pavement, but regains balance very momentarily - Record sounds of person tripping over a pavement kerb.
0:07 - Man runs passed Shaun on pavement, at a fast pace, panning from right to left - Record someone running from right to left on pavement setting, and use panning tool on Final Cut Pro, to establish a panning motion from the sound.
0:11-0:17 - In background, there are two zombies which are minding their own business. An assumption that they would be making groaning noises can be given - Record someone making groaning noises, as though they are trying to mimic a Zombie.
0:19-0:49 - Shaun walks into shop. A different floor surface (Laminate or Squeaky Tile) is present and the radio is blaring out a song, of which is of a calming, elevator-esque nature.
Action to take for 0:19-0:49:
Floor: Record someone walking on a floor surface which is covered in squeaky tiles or a laminate surface.
Radio: We assume that the radio will be playing where the shop counter is situated, so as Shaun walks into the shop, the music is at it's loudest, and is biased towards the left of the video. We will use panning for this. As Shaun walks further into the shop, towards the back, the radio will start to fade to a lower level. As he walks back to the counter, the Radio will become much louder, showing a sense of depth.
0:25-0:34 - Shaun walks up to the refrigerator and opens the fridge door. He starts to rustle some cans of fizzy pop and grabs one can. He changes his mind about purchasing that can of pop, and puts it back. As soon as that action has stopped, Shaun grabs another can, and agrees with the intent to purchase that can. He then shuts the fridge door, but in a fashion where it does not shut properly.
We therefore need to record a fridge door being opened, then record someone who is rustling with cans of pop in a box of some sort. As the fridge door is not closed properly, we do not need to record a fridge door being closed shut.
0:35 - Shaun slips on liquid that is placed on the floor, which creates a huge squeak sound. He regains posture after slipping though - Record someone slipping on a wet floor.
0:37-0:50 - The shopkeeper of which has turned into a zombie, shows up in the background. As like the zombies in the first part of the clip, we can assume that the zombies will be making a groaning noise. - Record someone making groaning noises, as though they are trying to mimic a Zombie
0:40-0:44 - Shaun walks to another fridge, where he opens this fridge using the fridge door. He then grabs a 'Cornetto' from the fridge, and slams the fridge door. - We should record someone opening a fridge, however we should use a different pitched recording, so that the first and second fridges do not sound the same, as their appearance is not the same. Because the fridge door is shut, we should record a sound of a fridge being shut

What is foley?
foley is when a few people collect sounds that are lost during the recording of a film or video. during the the recording small sounds like a pencil being drooped on the floor is too quiet for the boom mic to pick up. foley is also used to record sounds that didn't exist during the filming. several famous examples would be the sound of the t-rex in Jurassic park.
in many tv shows Foyle is very important, shows like the walking dead need folly to make the sounds of limbs being cut off and heads being smashed. to make a head smashing sound Foyle artists would crush a wet ball of cabbage.
History of foley
in 1922 sound was introduced to cinema without this groundbreaking invention foley would not exist. Foley was ivented by a man called Jack Foley (1891-1967) began what is now known as Foley art in 1927. He had started working with universal studios in 1914 during the silent movie era. When Warner studios released its first film to include sound, the jazz singer , Universal knew it needed to get on the bandwagon and called for any employees who had radio experience to come forward. Foley became part of the sound crew that would turn Universal’s then upcoming “silent” musical show boat into the musical that it is known as today. Because the microphones used for filming could not pick up more than dialog, other sounds had to be added in after the film was shot.
Foley and his small crew would project the film on a screen while recording a single track of audio that would capture their live sound effects in real time. Their timing had to be perfect so that footsteps and closing doors would sync with the actors' motions in the film. Jack Foley created sounds for films until his death in 1967. His methods are still employed today.

Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound
Diegetic Sound
diegetic sound is the sound that is in the universe of the film or tv show. sounds like cars, gunshots and footsteps are just a few diegetic sounds that can be used. diagetic sound is what you can see on the screen anything else is non diagetic sound.
Non-Diegetic Sound
non diegetic sound is sound that you cant see on screen or that the characters are not aware of it. a good example would be a narration by morgan freeman or a explosion off screen. non diagetic sound would be used to have a narration explain a flashback or whats happening. The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening. We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).
Juxtaposition
junxtapasiton is when a soundtrack that is playing in a scene is either not appropriate or has nothing to do with the situation of the scene a good example would be in shaun of the dead when the song dont stop me now was playing. a good example would be this shaun of the dead clip.

Mood and Meaning
the mood of a film can change how the audience feels about the scene. a good example of this would be one of the last scenes when shindler is leaving the factory sad music is being played while he is saying he could have got more people the music is used to show the audience how he was felling about this.

in the tom and jerry video that we made we experenced some problems. during the recording we colected some good sounds that we used for the video. when we added the sounds we didient save them to the computer because of this when we where working on the video the next week the sounds where gone.
because of this we had to create some new sounds and upload them we made shure that we properly saved them on to the computer as we did are work. when we did this we missed a few sounds and lost them. on the thered week of the project we noteced this and we dident have time to colect new sounds.
on the thered week we had to get our sounds from freesfx and youtube. the clips that we used from youtube was "secret service weponry" and "how to stop someone screaming" we only used a small section of the sound from the video as we only needed the exploshion and a scream.
while putting new sounds into the video we needet to edid some of the sounds o make them apropreate for the video. with one sound we needet to repeat it and speed it up to make it work for the section of the clip. the quality of the final peice is not as good as we hopped but we are happy with the overall project.
with the final project we wuuld have prefered to use are own sounds but because of a sereis of mistakes when it came to saveing it we where forced to grt them from the internet. we could improve our foley skills and we need to improve on saveing the sounds on the computer and not just on the film making program. we need to improve on actuly putting sounds that are in sinc to the clip, but during the second week we got beter at this.
